Consumers can’t resist a sale or promotion. So much so that when you walk through a shopping center, store windows showcase the new arrivals but lure us inside with the promise of 30% off or BOGO offers.  Like a fish to a worm, we’re hooked and in we go “just to take a look”.

The popular Nielsen Rating Research Company reported that in 26% of online consumers in the US use mobile coupons for in-store shopping and 54% said they would be willing to use them if their favorite stores offered them.

You can use to create fabulous coupons for your customers!

Be sure to read all the way to end of this blog post for an important message about Coupons and Promotions on your Mobile App!

Here are the Top 5 Most Effective Promotions, Offers and Coupons to offer on a Mobile App:

The “Traditional” Discount

An old-fashioned traditional discount will lure customers like ice cold lemonade on a hot day. They’re traditional because these discounts have withstood the test of time and can be used in just about every industry.

Fun Fact – the very first Traditional Coupon offer was created by Harry Selfridge, a young man originally born in Wisconsin who went on to become a shopping store mogul, creating the first Department Store called Selfridges located in London, England. It was at Selfridges in London where Harry launched the world’s first Discount.

Example of the Traditional Discount incude: percentage off (10% off) a dollar amount discount ($50 off) or a reduced price (was $200, now $157).

The “Buy This, Get That” Promotion

This is another classic in the world of coupons and promotions. Consumers feel like they’ve really won when they are given something for free or at a deep discount.  This type of offer is a terrific way to reward your customers for making a purchase with your company, by offering them a gift or giving them another product for free or at a reduced price when they purchase a certain product or service.

While this is considered a coupon or promotion in the marketing world, it could also be viewed favorably as an “Incentive to purchase” or “reward for purchase”.

Offers of “BOGO” (Buy One Get One), “Receive a Free X, with the Purchase of every Y”, or GWP (Gift With Purchase). This coupon/ promotion type is used heavily in the fragrance and cosmetics industries with their famous promotions of “Gift with Purchase” or “Bonus Time”. One such company, Clinique has coined the phrase, “Its Clinique Bonus Time.”

1st Time App User Coupon

Winner winner chicken dinner! This coupon really crushes it on so many levels.

First, you are rewarding people for doing something you want them to do, which is to download your app. Getting someone to download your app is as valuable as getting them to come into your store, restaurant or place of business. Its all about traffic to your business or website and with a mobile app, its all about the downloads… which will drive traffic to your place of business or your website (or they can make purchases right on your app if you have e-commerce set up.)

Second, this type of coupon encourages a purchase. Whether someone is a first time customer or a long time loyal fan, consumers are more likely to make a purchase of a higher dollar value when they are offered an incentive such as a discount on that purchase. Think about your own buying habits. How many times have you added in a few extra items or purchased an upgrade to a service plan because you knew you were getting a discount?

Third, you are directly engaging customers with your mobile app. They are downloading it and learning how to go to the Coupons/ Promotions button and check for specials. They are now fully interacting with you via your mobile app.

After viewing and using their first time use Coupon, they will click around on the other buttons to see what else they can find that’s useful or money-saving on your mobile app.

Birthday Coupon

1 day out of every 365, you have the opportunity to really make someone feel extra special. Seize this opportunity by offering a special coupon or promotion when your customers shop on their birthday or during their birthday week.

Starbucks and Panera Bread are two companies that win big with this on-going year round promotion. Everyone who has the Starbucks mobile app knows that you get a free coffee drink of any proportion (I always get the biggest mack-daddy drink on the menu), on your birthday. Panera usually offers a free bakery drink.

The famous author Maya Angelo wrote, “people don’t always remember what you said, but they always remember how you made them feel.” This directly applies to the Birthday Coupon. You will turn up the feel good factor to such a high volume that many customers will do business with you again just because you gave them a discount or a freebie on their birthdays.

Receive a Discount if You Like Us On Social Media

1.04 billion people are active on Facebook every single day. Chances are your customers are one of those billions. Today, social media plays an important role the marketing of businesses. I’m not here to say that print magazines and newspapers will ever be fully phased out like the gigantic yellow pages phone phone book was. I don’t know what the future holds for print, but I do know that on-line marketing on social media is a “must” for all businesses in order to grow and remain competitive in the years to come.

That said, offering an incentive to follow you on social media or check in while in your place of business, is a great way to reward your customers for taking an important action.

Viewed more as a “reward” than a “coupon” offering a discount for liking you on social media, checking in at your place of business or taking a photo in your business and sharing it on their page, is the height of customer engagement.

This can be a one-time use coupon or promotion or it can be on-going. You can create a coupon for each Social Media platform, of course making it well noted that they cannot combine discounts. In other words, if you’re smart and you create a Facebook Check-in 10% coupon and a Tweet Now 10% discount, they cannot use both on the same day to receive 20% off their purchase.

Important Message About Mobile Coupons, Offers and Promotions

Nothing gets an app deleted from someone’s phone faster than outdated, old coupons or no coupons!!  Coupons/ Promotions are a HUGE reason people will download and use an app from a business.

Keep them fresh and updated. If you set an expiration date for your coupons, make sure to delete it from your mobile app upon expiration.

Consumers like a good deal. They like, promotions, coupons and freebies. Consumers also like to feel they are part of the buying process  and they like to be made to feel special. Throughout the year, be sure to offer coupons that are unique, rewarding and engaging. They don’t have to meet all three of these criteria all the time, but be sure you’re mindful of those three criteria when you create your coupons and promotions.

Change out your coupons/ promotions at least once per month if not more such as every 3 – 4 weeks.

Its OK to have long term coupons on there such as the Birthday Coupon or your Social Media Engagement Coupons/ Promotions, but be sure to add other fun, shorter termed coupons to keep it fresh.
